Born and raised in Canada’s capital, SORU strives to create a unique sound that pushes the boundaries of urban music, blurring the lines between R&B and Hip Hop. Playing the piano was his first musical venture, obtaining a six-year certification by the Royal Conservatory of Arts at the age of 12. Singing then came naturally, imitating legends such as Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles & Michael Jackson, the latter of which inspired him to begin moving to the music. As a young teen, dance became a passion that went hand in hand with music, leading him to becoming the Artistic Director of Culture Shock Ottawa, a professional Hip Hop dance troupe with chapters in Toronto, Los Angeles, D.C. and more. A chance meeting with current labelmate Gruw Raw of Ottawa band Bars and Tone gave SORU the opportunity to begin recording in a studio environment. Putting together mixtape projects over the years allowed learning and practice through real recording experience. Raw soon introduced the R&B singer to Sean Blake and Joe Nativv, the other two thirds of Bars and Tone.Collaborating on various songs, it became clear that SORU had a place in the up-and-coming artist collective, DeadRinger. Backed by the Bars and Tone trio as a production team, SORU began searching for his signature sound. Melding elements of R&B and Hip Hop with a Rock influence, that sound developed into something unique and entertaining: modern, yet clearly inspired by the many great artists they respected. SORU’s debut album “City Lights” is now available as a free download on Soundcloud and Bandcamp. Resume & Self Tape Audition can be provided as per request
