Rafael Luz

Orchestra Conductor

Afael brings his passion for music from his native Brazil where he returns biannually to teach at the Eleazar de Carvalho Festival and conduct the Festival orchestra. A strong believer in developing an appreciation for classical music and music-making from grass roots, Rafael taught string instruments to kids and adults in very poor areas of São Paulo, creating six string orchestras that bring classical music to people unaccustomed to this genre. Luz is a versatile conductor with experience in both the operatic and symphonic repertoire. Conducting engagements have taken him to Europe, South and North America. Rafael earned his Master of Arts in Conducting from the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York and a Bachelor of Arts in Conducting from the FAAM in São Paulo. He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto where he holds the position of Assistant Conductor for the Opera Division.
